Community-Based Neurology Service
London Veterinary Neurology is an independent second opinion and referral service for pets in London suffering from neurological symptoms. It was created to solve the most significant problems in veterinary referral practice; accessibility and continuity of care. We accept consultation requests directly from pet owners as well as from referring veterinary surgeons and we work with a network of local practices to offer comprehensive community-based care. John will be your single point of contact for as long as he is needed and - we hope - beyond.
John has practised as a veterinary neurologist for almost 20 years. He studied to become a veterinary surgeon at the University of Bristol before undertaking eight years of post-graduate training at the University of Cambridge in clinical neurology and neuroscience. He has worked at many of the large veterinary referral hospitals across the country, both as an independent consultant and later as head of service. However, John’s passion is for providing a personalised service and being part of a community of clients so he decided to set up London Veterinary Neurology in 2025.
John was an RCVS and EBVS recognised specialist in Veterinary Neurology for 10 years before deciding not to re-certify in 2021 and to focus his time on private clinical practice. He holds the European Diploma in Veterinary Neurology (non-certified).
Our services
Consultation
The consultation is profoundly valuable in the field of veterinary neurology. Our patients cannot talk and the nervous system is hidden from sight. The presentation of signs and the findings of the neurological examination are therefore essential to localising the problem and narrowing down the list of possible causes.
In some cases it is possible to make a presumptive diagnosis from the consultation alone. However, most patients will require further tests to make a diagnosis with sufficient confidence to decide upon a treatment and John will talk through the options with you and co-ordinate the next steps.
Decisions are made based on probabilities and risk-reward analysis. Nothing in medicine is black and white and every patient and their circumstances are unique.
Imaging
Imaging plays a very important role in neurology. We offer access to CT and MRI through our partnerships and John is able to interpret imaging studies for both his own patients and as well as offering a second opinion service.
Surgery
The decision to operate is not one that we take lightly. However, sometimes surgery is necessary to alleviate pain or to reverse disability and we are able to offer this service on-site or at one of our partner hospitals. John is well known as an experienced and meticulous surgeon with excellent results.
Continuity of Care
We believe that continuity of care is the foundation of success in medicine. John will stay with you and your pet throughout the journey from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.
